The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is organizing the first-ever Global Conference on Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization (GAMC), under the theme of “Efficiency, Inclusiveness and Resilience” from September 27-29, 2023.
The GAMC will discuss context-specific interventions that enable the optimization of agricultural mechanization efficiencies combined with the minimization of the deleterious effects of agricultural mechanization systems on the environment.
Bram Govaerts, CIMMYT director general will participate in the Plenary Session 1 on Wednesday, September 27, and add value as a significant thought leader in sustainable agricultural mechanization and a catalyst in food systems transformation.
Objectives
- Increase awareness of the contribution of SAM to implementing the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-31, to attain the SDGs at global, regional and national levels.
- Share information and knowledge on the strategic direction and technical developments in SAM worldwide.
- Demonstrate FAO’s technical leadership and convening power to support its members in leveraging on SAM as an important pillar in the transformation towards sustainable agrifood systems.
- Provide a neutral platform and strengthen technical networks on SAM for demand-driven and context-specific multi-stakeholder dialogues.
Themes
The GAMC will highlight ways for context-specific interventions to optimize the use of agricultural equipment and harness its benefits while minimizing harmful effects on the environment.
The conference will allow participants to discuss the potential opportunities and challenges of SAM technologies in improving global agricultural productivity, across seven themes:
- Mechanization for Sustainable Crop Production
- Post-harvest Management and agro-processing
- Climate change and resilience
- Digitalization and automation
- Supply chains and standards
- Business models and Multi-stakeholder engagement
- Enabling environment for sustainable agricultural mechanization and digitalization
Expected Outputs
The GAMC will bring the following four expected outcomes:
- Priorities established for the targeted mobilization and pooling of scientific, technical and financial resources to achieve global SAM systems.
- Evidence debated and knowledge shared shared through the creation and management of functional technical networks.
- A global knowledge product published as an evidence-based guide to promote SAM through the adoption of appropriate practices, partnerships and policies.
- A set of recommendations proposed to guide active innovation for SAM worldwide.
