IWYP aims to raise wheat’s genetic yield potential by 50% in the next 20 years. From September 27-28, 2023, IWYP will hold its 7th program conference under the theme, “Evaluating Progress and Moving to the Next Phase to create Impact.” Sessions will cover research project results, outcomes from development hubs, and cutting-edge technologies to enhance wheat yield improvement. CIMMYT scientists will engage in discussions and debates on hub development, climate impacts on wheat production and genomic sequencing:
Day 1: September 27, 2023
10:45 – 11:30 a.m. (GMT -5)
IWYP Translation and Development Hubs – Update on Pipelines, Outputs and Next Steps (Chair: Jeff Gwyn, IWYP)
IWYP Spring Wheat Hub at CIMMYT | Speakers: Matthew Reynolds, Carolina Rivera Amado, Carlos Robles Zazueta, Jacinta Gimeno Romeu, CIMMYT
Day 2: September 28, 2023
8 – 8:45 a.m. (GMT -5)
Applying Cutting-Edge Technologies to Better Understand and Accelerate Wheat Yield Improvement – Mass Genomic Sequencing to Reveal Genetic Variation and Haplotypes Linked to Phenotypes
Global Wheat G2B – AGIS+CIMMYT+JIC Project | Speakers: Shifeng Cheng (AGIS), Susanne Dreisigacker (CIMMYT), Simon Griffiths (JIC), Matthew Reynolds (CIMMYT)
9 – 9:45 a.m. (GMT -5)
Discussion and debate
Given the concerns about effects of changing environments on wheat production, should IWYP keep its focus on yield potential or also embrace addressing traits for climate resilience, e.g., for heat and drought?
Chair: Hans Braun
Panel members: Gemma Molero (KWS), Leo Crespo (CIMMYT)
10 – 10:45 a.m. (GMT -5)
Are introgressions from wild/exotic germplasm the best potential sources for “breakthroughs” in wheat yield improvement?
Chair: Julie King
Panel members: Simon Griffiths (JIC), Matthew Reynolds (CIMMYT), Eduard Akhunov (KSU), John Fellers (USDA, KSU), Marc Albertsen (Corteva retired)
