Background image for CIMMYT

CIMMYT holds official presence in Zimbabwe since 1985, when a maize research station was established. CIMMYT is a key partner to the national Zimbabwean government, NARES, major donors, and NGOs in the country, through collaborative efforts to combat crop production challenges.

With over 10 CIMMYT-led projects in Zimbabwe, CIMMYT researchers, practitioners, and local stakeholders collaborate on breeding climate resilient maize varieties, strengthening sustainable climate-smart agricultural practices, adopting appropriate scale mechanization, and promoting knowledge sharing between policymakers.

Our impact

  • 52 local mechanization service providers established in Zimbabwe and Zambia.
  • 5 pro-vitamin A maize hybrids with up to 12ppm vitamin A content released.
  • >35,000MT of certified seed of stress tolerant maize varieties, with more than 40% having CIMMYT genetics, produced in 2023.
